Ultrafast Internet in Lexington?

Have you heard? MetroNet, an Indiana-based telecommunications company, has begun construction in some Lexington neighborhoods as it installs a fiber-optic broadband network. This will bring ultrafast internet, as well as television and telephone service to Fayette County.

MetroNet subtractors started work in January, after the company was awarded a franchise agreement in December. Before construction begins in your neighborhood, MetroNet will send out four different notifications. Check here to track construction!

It's possible that MetroNet can serve it's first customers by summer or fall of this year, but it's predicted that the entire network will take up to three years to build. MetroNet will be spending $70-$100 million building the fiber-optic network that is capaple of providing gigabit (ultrafast!) speed. According to some studies, Lexington's average internet speed is 16.2 megabits per second. With gigabit speed, it's 1,000 megabits per second!
